What is a Seed Planter?
When Pamela was growing up, her family fell well below the poverty line. Her father - a brilliant man - struggled with PTSD as a result of his upbringing and incarceration. She frequented hospitals and institutions to visit family members with mental health issues. All the red flags existed, and for a time, Pamela reacted.
In her teens, the school ultimately classified her as "at-risk" - the phrase of the day. Yet, over the years, people and programs consistently appeared in her life, empowering her to take another step forward. These "seed planters," as she calls them, did not know whether the seeds they planted would blossom. They did it anyway. They offered lifelines, pulling her back to shore each time social and familial circumstances threatened to throw her off course. As a result, Pamela beat the statistics. She went to college, received the support and help she needed as a single mother on public assistance, and ultimately grew a thriving career. She broke the pattern of generational poverty. |
Today, Pamela believes being a "seed planter" in life, in leadership, and on the job is the greatest way to give back. She has worked extensively with LGBTQ+ organizations, which is a passion pursuit for her. She writes often on disability advocacy (Pamela's autistic daughter Neptune has served as a major inspiration in her life). Likewise, she has spent decades investing back into the Higher Education Opportunity Program. HEOP allows students who would normally not qualify for college admissions, to receive the financial and academic support they need to enroll and graduate. HEOP programs serve financially distressed students, most often from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds. |
